The only "Sport Mod" class in the entire East Coast area (for IMCA/UMP/E-mods) can be found in NW PA and NE Ohio under the Tri-State Modified sanctioning. Their cars are called "Hot Mods" but they are more akin to a street stock chassis because you have to maintain the entire subframe to the rear and use the OEM rear mounting locations and arms (even though the cars look like modifieds). My opinion is that if your new driver has at least raced before you can gain valuable experience running at VMS or Potomac and ask to start at the rear of the field. I moved up from 600 microsprints to the modifieds at VMS back in 2004 and started in the back until I got comfortable. I also talked to a lot of the drivers so they knew I was learning so hopefully they would give me some slack.
Another way to get a lot of laps under a new driver's belt is to attend practice sessions that are held at the beginning of the year at most tracks. I typically will shake down our car at Susquenhanna Speedway near Harrisburg, PA at the beginning of the season. They have practice nights on Wednesdays about twice a month and you get at least four sessions per night (and at $35 how can you beat it!). Track size is between VMS and Potomac... Currently, you will see Chris Arnold racing out there (following in his Dad's footsteps) getting great experience racing with most of us for the first time. With car counts down at all of the tracks this is a great time for a new driver to get experience without a lot of traffic on the track.
We wish you guys the best of luck next year and hope to see you at Potomac, VMS, or Eastside soon!
